Homeschooling

Homeschooling Pros and Cons - Learn About the Pros and Cons

Homeschooling Pros and Cons - Learn About the Pros and Cons

By Paul Hegarty

Making a choice about your child's schooling takes a lot of thinking and consideration. You need to decide what is the absolute best decision for your child. I hope that the following information about homeschooling will help to guide you in your decision making.

Homeschooling pros:

You decide what your child learns, and when they learn it. This is, I believe, the biggest pro for homeschooling. You decide whether you want your child to learn evolution or creation, Christianity or Islam or no religion, all of the choices are left up to you!

You learn along with you child. You and your child will grow closer to each other as you learn together, and spend practically all day every day together.

In addition to this your child will have your undivided attention compared to being in a classroom with thirty other students.

Homeschooling cons:

Your child will not have the same social life that they would have if they went to a different school. This is, I believe, the biggest con for homeschooling. Your child will not be as comfortable around people other than their family, because they will not be hanging out with other people on a regular basis.

You will need to make a big time commitment. You will be dedicating many hours each day to teaching your child, and therefore will not have as much time left for other things.

No matter what decision you end up making, I hope that you will give this important decision an incredible amount of thought.

Graco Stroller RECALL Information

The recall concerns uncovered hinges on the canopy of the Graco Passage, Alano, and Spree strollers, which have caused seven severe injuries to toddler's fingers.

The strollers in question were sold between October 2004 and February 2008 at several dozen retailers including Target, Wal-Mart, Babies “R” Us, Toys “R” Us, Kmart, and Sears. The strollers cost between $80 and $200.

You can find the stroller's model number and manufacture date on the lower inside portion of the rear frame, just above the rear wheels.

If you have one of the problem strollers, stop using it immediately, and order a repair kit from Graco. Call 800-345-4109 or go through the Graco website.

I found this fascinating quote today:

This came somewhat out of left field for us, but it appears someone has been paying attention to what we’ve been doing! Web analytic company PostRank has an algorithm by which they rank website engagement - some kind of special sauce that tracks how popular and relevant a site is by how many links, comments, and social media notices it gets. They revealed their top sites for 2009 in a whole bunch of categories yesterday, and GeekDad did amazingly well, including top honors for Parenting, Dads and Kids, and a fantastic top-10 finish in the extremely competitive Geeks category (behind Slashdot and io9, but ahead of BoingBoing Gadgets and even the Wired Culture feed!).wired.com, GeekDad Named Best Parenting Blog of 2009 by PostRank!, Jan 2010

Writing

How to Teach a Child to Write

How to Teach a Child to Write

By Lisa A Mason

Have you ever thought about how to teach a child to write? If you have young children of your own, you may have already gone through the experience of helping them learn to write. Learning to write is a process. As adults, many of us are so used to knowing how to write that we forget the process we once had to go through as well.

This process can begin when your child is a toddler and as a parent, you can do a lot to help your child learn to write. The first step to teaching a child to write is to set a good example yourself. You can be a role model to your child in many ways, so why not as a write as well?

Teaching your child to write can help him build his fine motor skills and help him to recognize letters and words. You can teach skills that will stay with your child for the rest of his life. When you encourage writing at a young age, you encourage skills that your child will use forever.

Here are some tips to teach your child to write:

• Write lists and notes for your child. Read these notes aloud.

• Encourage your child to mimic your behaviors and write and read aloud his own notes.

• Always pay attention to anything your child has written, no matter how "good" it is.

• Give your child the proper tools to write with.

• Show your child that writing is fun and important.

• Teach your child to recognize the letters of the alphabet.

• Use connect-the-dots to help your child learn to form the letters and words.

• Give the child activities that will help improve manipulation skills.

• Label things around the house so your child can become familiar with words and what they mean.

• Always encourage your child to scribble and draw on a daily basis.

• Keep crayons, pencils and other writing tools available on a regular basis.

• Help your child draw shapes, lines and other figures so they become comfortable with writing and drawing.

• Ask your child to write notes and cards such as thank you's for holidays.

Writing is a great deal about habit; the more you do it, the easier it will become. You can help your child learn to write by creating this as a regular habit in their lives.
